RISK BASED FOOD SAFETY DECISION MAKING WITHIN NATIONAL FOOD CONTROL SYSTEMS
Prof Lucia Anelich

  • 25 years at Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa as HOD Biotechnology and Food Technology and Associate Professor.
  • 2006: Joined Consumer Goods Council of South Africa and established a food safety body for the food industry, a first for the country.
  • 2011: Started own successful national and international food safety consulting and training business, Anelich Consulting.
Listeriosis outbreak in SA: Prof Anelich provided regular updates and opinions to stakeholders since early January 2018. She was interviewed over 40 times for printed media, radio and TV, spoken at 12 workshops / conferences nationally and internationally and co-organized three workshops on this topic for SAAFoST. She accompanied industry as technical expert to meetings with government, including with the South African Ministers of Health and Agriculture.

  • Immediate Past Chair of Scientific Council of IUFoST
  • Fellow of International Academy of Food Science and Technology

Prof Anelich served 4 years as Food Hygiene Expert for the African Union (IBAR), authored/co-authored several publications and chapters in books and presented over 140 talks nationally and internationally.

WHEN A CALORIE IS NOT A 'CALORIE'; HOW SENSORY CUES CAN INFLUENCE CALORIE PERCEPTION AND FOOD INTAKE
Dr Ciarán G. Forde
A STAR Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences, Singapore

Dr. Ciarán Forde is Senior Principal Investigator in 'Sensory Nutritional Science' at the Clinical Nutrition Research Center, a part of the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences. He holds a joint appointment with the National University of Singapore as an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and is Adjunct Professor in the School of Agriculture and Food Science, University College Dublin in Ireland.

Dr Forde joined the Clinical Nutrition Research Centre in 2015 to establish the 'Sensory and Ingestive Behaviour' lab, which seeks to understand how a foods sensory properties can be used to influence calorie selection and eating behaviours and through this impact energy intake and body composition. Dr Forde's team also conducts research on children's eating behaviours as part of the Growing up in Singapore to Healthier outcomes (GUSTO) birth cohort. By taking a lifespan approach, the goal is to understand how sensory factors can be used to influence food choice and intake behaviours, and through this develop food-based strategies to improve diets and health.

Dr. Forde has previously spent over 11 years in several food research roles in the UK, Australia and most recently at the Nestlé Research Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland leading research on sensory and cognitive factors that influence food intake. He holds a BSc. in Food Chemistry and PhD. in Sensory Science, from the Department of Nutrition, University College Cork in Ireland.

Katlego is a Researcher, Thought Leadership Speaker and Strategic Planner with over 7 years of experience in the Advertising industry. His experience across different sectors of the market has given him the wholistic understanding of how to assist brands appeal to different markets found within the South African landscape.
He studied BA Marketing Communications and the University of Johannesburg; Digital Marketing course at Red and Yellow Creative School of Business; started his career as a Media Strategist at Joe Public United; then changed his career path to practising Brand Strategy; and he is now a Senior Strategist at Brave Group.

Of recent, Katlego was featured on Forbes.com (the food & drink page) as one of the standout speakers from 'The Business of Wine and Food Tourism Conference' held in October 2018.
